oxen hill farm

farmers' market representative; CSA assistant; greenhouse & field worker

suffield, connecticut

In May 2012, I began working at Oxen Hill Farm, a USDA Certidied Organic vegetable and flower farm with a 300+ member Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. At Oxen Hill, I got to care for plants from seed to supper: seeding and maintaining them in a greenhouse, transplanting and weeding fields, harvesting and processing vegetables for market, and representing the farm at CSA pickups and at four farmers’ markets across Connecticut. As a market employee, I worked with a high degree of independence, oftentimes packing for market and setting up and running the stand by myself, where I maintained the farm’s reputation and cultivated positive relationships with customers and other vendors. In May 2014 I will return to Oxen Hill Farm as their very first full-season apprentice!

nook & cranny farm

In February 2014, I began an internship at Nook & Cranny Farm, a small organic vegetable farm with a 50 share summer CSA program, as well as a 30 share spring CSA. I started seeds in a greenhouse setting, transplanted seedlings into hoophouses by hand, prepared and planted new beds, harvested and processed produce for weekly boxed CSA shares, and assisted in on-farm construction and deconstruction projects, including low tunnels and moving a high-tunnel hoop house.

Volunteer through the Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms (WWOOF) program

björklinge, sweden

In June and July 2013, I worked on an organic vegetable farm in a small town in rural Sweden, an hour north of Stockholm. I was one of ten volunteers from around the world living and working on the farm. I mainly hand-weeded fields, made soil blocks and seeded them, and transplanted in the fields. Living, working, playing, and cooking with people from all different countries was one of the most exciting and educational experiences of my life. I treasure the time I spent on that farm, living outside under the midnight sun of summertime.

gardens: ecological design and practice

teaching assistant

ithaca, new york

After taking the Gardening Principles and Practices course at Ithaca College in Fall 2011, I became a teaching assistant for the course in Fall 2012. I assisted in designing and teaching a basic gardening and permaculture course with a team of three student teaching assistants. We led lessons on seeding, harvesting, garden maintenance, compost, weeds, soil, and an introduction to permaculture. The course culminated with a group project, and I led a team of students in creating a season extension project, building a low-tunnel from PVC pipes, fabric, and plastic to grow cold-hardy crops in.
